The Privacy Tunnel

When you browse the internet at home, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) acts as your gateway. Because they control the network, they can see a massive amount of your digital footprint, including exactly which websites you visit and when. To reclaim privacy, many users turn to a Virtual Private Network, or VPN. But it is vital to separate the marketing hype from the technical reality of what a VPN actually does.

1. How a VPN Works

  • Encrypted tunnel

Your traffic travels through the tunnel, completely hiding it from your ISP and local Wi-Fi hackers.

  • VPN server relay

The VPN server then forwards your request to the website.

  • Masked identity

The website only sees the IP address and location of the VPN server, keeping your true location and identity hidden.

2. What a VPN Does NOT Do

  • Not anonymous

If you turn on a VPN and then log into your personal Facebook or Google account, those companies still know exactly who you are.

  • Not anti-malware

A VPN will happily encrypt the ransomware you accidentally decided to download.

  • Shifts trust

You are stopping your ISP from seeing your data, but you are now trusting the VPN company with that exact same data. Always use a reputable "No-Log" VPN provider.

Pro-Tip: The "Incognito" Myth

Browser features like Chrome's "Incognito" or Edge's "InPrivate" mode do NOT hide your traffic from your ISP, your school, or your employer. Incognito mode simply tells your browser not to save your local history or cookies on your device after you close the window. It is local privacy, not network privacy.

Knowledge Check

If you turn on a VPN, what happens to your internet traffic from the perspective of your local Internet Service Provider (ISP)?\n\nA) They can still see every webpage you visit.\nB) They only see encrypted gibberish traveling to a single VPN server; they cannot see which websites you are visiting.\nC) Your internet speed increases tenfold.
