Reducing Your Footprint
Practical steps to shrink your digital footprint and limit future data collection
Opening
Shrink the trail, not your life online
Going fully offline is not realistic for most people. Reducing your footprint means posting less sensitive data, locking down old accounts, and choosing privacy-friendly defaults. Small habits compound over time.
1. Audit What Is Already Public
Search your name
Use a search engine and image search. Note outdated profiles, forum posts, and leaked list appearances.
Review social privacy settings
Set posts to friends-only where possible. Hide birth year, phone number, and friend lists from public view.
Close or freeze unused accounts
Old forums and trial sign-ups are breach targets. Delete what you do not need or remove personal details.
2. Limit New Data You Share
Before posting, ask: would I be comfortable if this were public forever? Avoid sharing exact location, travel plans, school schedules, or answers to common security questions (pet names, maiden names). Use separate emails for shopping, newsletters, and banking when you can—covered in detail later in this topic.
3. Browser and Device Habits
Block third-party trackers
Use built-in browser tracking protection or strict privacy modes for everyday browsing.
Clear cookies periodically
Especially after shopping or using shared computers. Log out of sensitive sites when finished.
Say no to optional permissions
Deny location, contacts, and microphone access unless the app truly needs them for core features.
Opt out when offered
Many sign-up forms pre-check marketing and data-sharing boxes—uncheck them by default.
The “grandparent test”
If you would not want a family member or future employer to see it, do not post it—or post it only in a locked channel.
