Ten APPLY items on the map this module refused to turn into a hunt: passive recon is reading published pages, job posts, and DNS on example.com or a domain YOU own; active recon is a packet you sent on purpose, and that packet needs written permission (ownership or RoE) before it leaves your machine. Allowed names are example.com (IETF designated example host) or a registrar account you control. Google dorks of stranger login pages, Shodan-against-random cameras and routers, AXFR against zones you do not administer, neighbor blogs as “practice,” café portals, and school staff scrapes are failing answers even when a blog titled them “CEH footprinting.” The lab artifact is $HOME/cyberlium-lab/ceh-footprint.txt (plus sibling notes) chmod 600 — public facts, date, source, ethics line. Empty files fail. World-writable 777 fails. Files that list other people’s staff fail ethics even if the data was on the web.
