1. Why Every Security Professional Needs a Lab

Cybersecurity cannot be mastered solely through reading books or multiple-choice exams. Real competence requires troubleshooting broken network sockets, analyzing failed exploits, and viewing the exact Windows Event ID generated by an attack.

A virtualized home lab empowers you to break systems, take snapshots, restore state within seconds, and understand both the offensive and defensive perspectives.

2. Hypervisor Selection: Proxmox vs. Desktop Virtualization

Type-2 Hypervisors (VirtualBox, VMware Workstation): Run on top of your existing Windows or macOS operating system. Excellent for portability and laptops with at least 16GB RAM.

Type-1 Hypervisors (Proxmox VE): Installs directly on dedicated hardware (an old PC or mini-server). Provides a web-based cluster management interface, containerization (LXC), and enterprise networking.

3. Establishing Safe Network Segmentation

Under no circumstances should intentionally vulnerable target machines (like Metasploitable) be bridged directly to your home Wi-Fi or router subnet.

Configure an isolated Internal Virtual Network (Host-Only or Internal NAT). Your attacking machine (Kali Linux) should sit dual-homed: one adapter connected to the internet for package updates, and a second adapter connected to the isolated lab subnet.

4. Adding Defensive Telemetry with Wazuh

Ethical hacking is only half the battle. Install Wazuh or Elastic Agent on your target machines. When you execute an Nmap scan or launch a Metasploit payload from Kali, observe the alert generation in the Wazuh dashboard in real time.
