Cafés, airports, and evil twins

"Free Wi-Fi" is not free of risk
Airports, hotels, campuses, and cafés tempt you to save mobile data. Open and shared networks are shared space. Anyone nearby — including a quiet stranger with a laptop — may try to trick you onto the wrong access point or watch for careless logins. You do not need to fear every café forever. You need a defensive checklist: verify the network name with staff or official signage, avoid sensitive logins without cellular data or a trusted VPN, turn off reckless auto-join, and recognize what an "evil twin" is so you can walk away. This lesson teaches recognition and avoidance on YOUR devices. It never teaches how to run rogue access points, intercept others, or attack café Wi-Fi.
1. Rogue access points (evil twins) — recognize, do not build
An evil twin is a lookalike Wi-Fi network: attackers broadcast a tempting name such as "StarBrew_Free_Guest" or "Airport_Free_Internet" next to the real hotspot. If you connect, your traffic may route through equipment they control. They can present captive-portal phishing pages that harvest credentials, push hostile "updates," or observe unencrypted traffic. The danger is social and visual — the SSID looks official — not that you failed a cryptography exam.
Defensive recognition cues: multiple similar SSIDs, a network that appears before you ask staff for the real name, unexpected certificate or login warnings after you connect, pressure to install a "Wi-Fi helper" app, or a portal that asks for banking passwords just to get online. Your response is boring and effective: disconnect, forget the network, use cellular, or confirm the exact SSID with staff and then prefer VPN-first if you must stay on Wi-Fi. Never practice by broadcasting twins yourself — that is unauthorized access territory and out of scope for Cyberlium.
2. Shared networks, MitM risk, and what HTTPS still cannot save
Even on a legitimate café router, you share a broadcast domain with strangers. Attackers on the same network may attempt man-in-the-middle (MitM) positions: inserting themselves between your device and the gateway to tamper with or observe what is not protected. Modern HTTPS/TLS still helps enormously for real destinations you typed correctly — page contents and passwords to that host stay encrypted. HTTPS does not save you from connecting to the wrong network and then typing secrets into a phishing portal that looks like the airline or bank.
Combine layers you already learned: verify SSID → prefer cellular for money and password changes → trusted VPN before browsing if you use Wi-Fi → browser tracker hardening → type official domains yourself. Auto-join is a silent risk: phones that reconnect to any previous "Cafe_Guest" may join a twin with the same name later. Forget networks you no longer need. Disable auto-connect for open/public networks where your OS allows it.
Travel days stack risks: airport Wi-Fi, hotel portals that ask for room numbers and emails, and pressure to "just get online" before a flight. Decide your rule before wheels-up: boarding passes and banking on cellular; entertainment on verified hotel Wi-Fi behind a VPN if needed; never install helper apps from a portal. When you leave, forget the network so your phone does not keep probing for that SSID in the next city — a quiet defense against future lookalikes.

3. Wrong vs right: airport banking
Worked failure — same terminal, two choices. Defense only — no twin-building:

Connect to "Airport_Free_Internet" without asking anyone, open banking, trust Incognito, and install a "free booster" APK the portal recommends. You may be on a rogue network typing a password into a lookalike page. Incognito did not encrypt the radio path. The booster app may be malware.
Right
Confirm the exact SSID with staff or airport signage. Prefer mobile data for banking. If you must use Wi-Fi, join only the verified name, enable a trusted VPN first, type the bank domain yourself or use the official app already installed from the real store. Skip auto-join. Forget the network when you leave. Never try to "test" security by attacking the hotspot.
