Restore Test

Prove you can restore — test recovery on $LAB backup, not production without scope.

Visual · t16_restore_test

Untested backup = wish. Original Cyberlium.

A backup that never restores is a screensaver for anxiety.

Restore test: pick file or VM snapshot from YOUR backup, restore to isolated $LAB path, verify hash or content, document time-to-restore. Schedule quarterly for lab. Defenders measure RTO/RPO at literacy level — never 'test restore' by overwriting production or classmate VMs. Failed restore in lab is a valuable finding on YOUR process.

1. Restore steps

Select backup → isolate restore target → restore → verify → note duration.

Do not restore malware samples into unisolated daily driver — use $LAB VM.

Command guide

Try these commands — Restore steps

═══ TOOLS & WEBSITES ═══ Browse / read these (authorized learning only — stay in YOUR lab / program scope)

GNU tar — https://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/

═══ INSTALL ═══

Linux (Debian/Ubuntu):

Command — copy this

sudo apt install python3

macOS:

Command — copy this

brew install python3

Windows: Download https://python.org/downloads/

═══ LINUX / macOS ═══

Command — copy this

mkdir -p "$HOME/cyberlium-lab/t16-defense/backup-test"
echo lab-restore-test > "$HOME/cyberlium-lab/t16-defense/backup-test/sample.txt"
tar -czf /tmp/cyberlium-backup-test.tgz -C "$HOME/cyberlium-lab/t16-defense/backup-test" .
sha256sum /tmp/cyberlium-backup-test.tgz
tar -tzf /tmp/cyberlium-backup-test.tgz

Primary tools to practice this lesson: python3. Reference sites: GNU tar (https://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/). Run every command in the box — install first, then the usage lines — only on YOUR lab / program scope.

2. RTO / RPO literacy

Recovery Time Objective: how long downtime tolerated. Recovery Point Objective: max data loss window.

Lab sets modest targets for notes and configs.

3. Documentation

Record restore date, success/fail, lesson learned in policy file.

Failed test → fix backup job — not ignore.

4. What you ship: restore test record

Restore steps + one completed $LAB test result + RTO/RPO one-liners.

5. What you record before the next lesson

Restore test log entry.

6. Wrong vs right: stranger hosts vs YOUR lab hosts

Worked failure — same MSF word, opposite target. Right never needs a café Wi-Fi or classmate laptop.

  • Wrong: Restore old backup over production server without change ticket.
  • Right: Name restore test. Next: awareness training.
Hands-on Exercise

Mission: restore test log

1) Restore one $LAB file or snapshot to isolated path. 2) Verify content. 3) Write RTO/RPO for your lab notes.
