Penetration › Module 5 › Lesson 3
Lab-Only Exploit
Exploit validation belongs on intentional vulnerable $LAB_HOST — never classmates, café gear, or production without contract.
Visual · pentest_lab_only_exploit
Lab-only exploit literacy. $LAB_HOST only. Original Cyberlium.
Opening
The only acceptable exploit target here is the VM you can revert — $LAB_HOST.
When RoE permits, pentesters validate high-risk findings on scoped lab assets — proving impact for the report. Cyberlium limits validation to intentional vulnerable VMs at $LAB_HOST with snapshots. This is methodology literacy: confirm advisory applicability, attempt controlled validation, document result — not weaponize strangers. You will NOT provide or request step-by-step exploit PoCs against unauthorized targets. You will NOT Metasploit classmates, café routers, or employer production. Teaching stops at lab-boundary validation concepts. Next: Exploit Lab.
1. Lab validation prerequisites
Written RoE naming $LAB_HOST, completed enumeration notes, applicability checklist passed, VM snapshot taken, NEVER lines acknowledged. Missing any prerequisite → no validation attempt.
Lab VMs exist to be broken and reverted — stranger laptops do not.
Command guide
Try these commands — Lab validation prerequisites
═══ LINUX (Binary Analysis & Reverse Engineering) ═══
Disassemble main function using Intel assembly syntax
Command — copy this
objdump -d -M intel -j .text ./target_binary 2>/dev/null | head -30
Check binary security mitigations (NX, Canary, ASLR, PIE)
Command — copy this
checksec --file=./target_binary 2>/dev/null || readelf -l ./target_binary | grep GNU_STACK
Generate unique cyclic pattern for buffer overflow offset calculation
Command — copy this
python3 -c "
from itertools import product
chars = [b'A', b'B', b'C']
pattern = b''.join(b''.join(p) for p in product(b'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ', b'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz', b'0123456789'))[:128]
print('Cyclic Test Pattern (128 bytes):', pattern.decode())
"GDB debugging session quick start gdb -q ./target_binary (gdb) disassemble main (gdb) info registers
Primary tools to practice this lesson: searchsploit, curl. Reference sites: MITRE technique literacy (https://attack.mitre.org/); Exploit-DB. Run every command in the box — install first, then the usage lines — only on YOUR lab / program scope.
2. What lab validation produces
Evidence: timestamp, advisory ref, controlled result (success/fail), impact summary, remediation link. Enough for report — not a tutorial for attacking neighbors.
Failed validation is valid data — document why (wrong version, mitigations present).
3. Hard stops — no covering tracks, no stranger targets
Cyberlium does not teach covering tracks, anti-forensics, or persistence on unauthorized systems — those are crime skills, not OSCP literacy.
Ship: lab validation prerequisites list for $LAB_HOST. Next: Exploit Lab.
4. What you ship: lab-only validation prerequisites
Prerequisites list: RoE, enum, applicability, snapshot, $LAB_HOST only. NEVER strangers. NO cover-tracks. chmod 600.
5. What you record before the next lesson
Date. Prerequisites list. $LAB_HOST named. NO cover-tracks. File t19-m05-l03-lab-only-exploit.txt chmod 600.
6. Wrong vs right: stranger nets vs YOUR lab VMs
Worked failure — same MSF word, opposite target. Right never needs a café Wi-Fi or classmate laptop.
Wrong
Validate CVE on classmate PC. Practice anti-forensics on dorm host. Exploit café router 'for lab.'
Right
Write lab validation prerequisites for $LAB_HOST only. Next: Exploit Lab.
Mission: freeze lab-only validation rules
1) List five prerequisites before any lab validation. 2) Affirm $LAB_HOST as sole exploit target. 3) Write NO cover-tracks line. 4) chmod 600. Never exploit strangers.
