Post-Ex Goals

Post-exploitation goals on YOUR lab engagement — objectives, evidence, and RoE stops.

Post-Ex Goals

Visual · t19_postex_goals

Post-ex = actions after initial access on in-scope lab hosts. Original Cyberlium.

Post-ex answers 'what does the engagement prove?' — not 'how much damage can I cause outside RoE.'

Post-exploitation goals in authorized pentests include proving impact (access to flagged asset), collecting agreed evidence, mapping reachable segments within scope, and demonstrating detection gaps — all under written RoE on YOUR $LAB_VM and $LAB_AD. Typical goal categories: user data access proof (synthetic lab data), privilege proof on lab box, domain impact proof on $LAB_AD — never exfiltrating real PII from strangers. Stop at RoE time box and scope boundary. Post-ex is not a license for ransomware staging, credential theft from production, or persistence on systems you cannot revert.

1. Engagement-aligned goals

Read brief: capture user.txt/root.txt equivalents, reach DA on $LAB_AD, document path — not undefined 'own everything.'

Each goal maps to finding severity and report section later.

Command guide

Try these commands — Engagement-aligned goals

═══ LINUX / KALI (Penetration Testing & Service Audit) ═══

Port scan and service banner grabbing against authorized target

Command — copy this

nmap -sV -sC -Pn -T4 -p 21,22,80,443,445,3389 ${LAB_HOST:-127.0.0.1}

Enumerate web directories and hidden endpoints

Command — copy this

gobuster dir -u http://${LAB_HOST:-127.0.0.1} -w /usr/share/wordlists/dirb/common.txt -q -t 20 2>/dev/null || head -5 /etc/hosts

Metasploit framework module inspection (Safe lab syntax)

Command — copy this

msfconsole -q -x "use auxiliary/scanner/portscan/tcp; set RHOSTS 127.0.0.1; set PORTS 80,443; run; exit" 2>/dev/null || echo "Run in Kali msfconsole"

═══ WINDOWS (Audit Target) ═══ Enumerate open listening ports with process mappings

Command — copy this

netstat -ano | findstr /i "LISTENING"

Primary tools to practice this lesson: curl, python3. Reference sites: Post-exploitation ethics; REFUSE cover-tracks (https://attack.mitre.org/). Run every command in the box — install first, then the usage lines — only on YOUR lab / program scope.

2. Evidence discipline

Redacted screenshots, command summaries, timeline UTC — chmod 600 under $HOME/cyberlium-lab.

Synthetic lab flags only — no real employee directories or customer databases.

3. Stop conditions

RoE lists max hosts, no production, no third parties — stop when list complete or time expires.

If pivot would leave lab VLAN, stop and document blocker — do not bridge into dorm LAN.

4. What you ship: post-ex goals list

Three goals from YOUR lab brief + evidence rule + stop conditions.

5. What you record before the next lesson

Post-ex goals list path.

6. Wrong vs right: stranger nets vs YOUR lab VMs

Worked failure — same MSF word, opposite target. Right never needs a café Wi-Fi or classmate laptop.

  • Wrong: Exfiltrate real HR data from employer 'to prove impact.'
  • Right: Name post-ex goals under RoE. Next: Pivot Literacy.
Hands-on Exercise

Mission: post-ex goals

1) List three post-ex goals for $LAB engagement. 2) Write evidence redaction rule. 3) Write RoE stop conditions.
