IDA/Binary Ninja named literacy. $RE_LAB only. Original Cyberlium.

Opening

IDA and Binary Ninja are industry tools — naming them is literacy, not a license to pirate the tools or targets.

IDA Pro (Hex-Rays decompiler) and Binary Ninja are commercial disassemblers/decompilers widely used in industry and CTF. Both offer graph views, scripting, and type systems similar to Ghidra. Cyberlium names them so you recognize job postings and writeups — use only properly licensed installs on $RE_LAB for authorized binaries. You will NOT pirate IDA/Binary Ninja licenses or use them to crack commercial software. Ghidra remains the free default for labs. Next: Static Tools Lab.

1. IDA Pro (named)

Interactive Disassembler with graph mode, Hex-Rays decompiler plugin, IDC/Python scripting. Industry standard for firmware and malware RE — when authorization and license exist.

On $RE_LAB: if your school provides licensed IDA, use only on crackmes and toys per policy — same ethics as Ghidra.

═══ INSTALL ═══

Linux (Debian/Ubuntu):

Command — copy this

sudo apt install curl

Built-in (binutils)

macOS: Built-in

Windows: Built-in (PowerShell: Invoke-WebRequest) Use WSL or install binutils

═══ LINUX / macOS ═══

Command — copy this

export LAB_RE=${LAB_RE:-$HOME/cyberlium-lab/t23-re}
curl -sS https://docs.hex-rays.com/ | head -8
curl -sS https://docs.binary.ninja/ | head -8
strings "$LAB_RE/bin/hello" | head -10
strings "$LAB_RE/bin/check" | grep -E 'sum=|Hello' | head -5

Primary tools to practice this lesson: curl, strings. Reference sites: IDA docs (https://docs.hex-rays.com/); Binary Ninja docs (https://docs.binary.ninja/); strings(1) (https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/strings.1.html). Run every command in the box — install first, then the usage lines — only on YOUR lab / program scope.

2. Binary Ninja (named)

Modern UI with IL lifts, MLIL/HLIL intermediate languages, collaborative projects. Strong API for automation on authorized targets.

Compare workflow to Ghidra: import → analyze → rename → decompile — tool differs, literacy transfers.

3. Tool licensing ethics

Forbidden: pirating IDA/Binary Ninja, using cracked disassembler installs to crack other commercial software, or analyzing unauthorized binaries because 'the tool is expensive so I pirated it.'

Ship: comparison table — Ghidra vs IDA vs Binary Ninja, one column each: cost model, decompiler, script language. Next: Static Tools Lab.

4. What you ship: disassembler comparison table

Ghidra/IDA/Binary Ninja comparison. $RE_LAB licensed use only. NEVER tool or target piracy. chmod 600.

5. What you record before the next lesson

Date. Disassembler comparison. $RE_LAB named. File t23-m05-l03-ida-binja-named.txt chmod 600.

6. Wrong vs right: commercial piracy vs crackmes/CTF toys

Worked failure — same MSF word, opposite target. Right never needs a café Wi-Fi or classmate laptop.

  • Wrong

Pirate IDA to crack games. Confuse tool literacy with license to bypass DRM.

  • Right

Write disassembler comparison with licensing ethics note. Next: Static Tools Lab.

Mission: compare three disassemblers

1) Three columns: Ghidra, IDA, Binary Ninja. 2) Note cost and script language each. 3) Write NEVER pirate tools line. 4) chmod 600.
