Rogue AP Detection
Find unauthorized APs — WIDS, surveys, BSSID allowlists; defend YOUR and authorized sites.
Visual · t15_rogue_ap_detect
Rogue = AP not owned by org on wired or air. Original Cyberlium.
Detection protects people — it is not recon for your next attack.
Rogue AP detection uses wired-side switch discovery, over-the-air surveys, 802.11 management frame analysis, and WIDS/WIPS alerts. Compare observed BSSIDs against allowlists; flag SSID clones on wrong channels or wired MACs on office VLANs. Learn to read survey tools and controller logs on YOUR lab AP or authorized training environment — not to map neighbor APs for offensive twin deployment.
1. Detection sources
WIDS sensors, AP controller rogue tables, wired 802.1X port security.
Handheld survey apps on authorized walkthroughs — not wardriving strangers.

═══ INSTALL ═══
Linux (Debian/Ubuntu):
Command — copy this
sudo apt install network-manager sudo apt install iw
macOS: Use airport / System Settings Prefer Linux lab VM for iw
Windows: Use netsh wlan (built-in) Use Kali VM / WSL with iw
═══ LINUX / macOS ═══
Command — copy this
nmcli -f SSID,BSSID,SIGNAL device wifi list 2>/dev/null | awk 'NR==1 || NF' | head -25 iw dev 2>/dev/null | grep ssid || echo 'Compare BSSID: one expected BSSID per YOUR lab SSID'
Primary tools to practice this lesson: nmcli, iw. Reference sites: Rogue AP detect (https://www.wi-fi.org/discover-wi-fi/security); MITRE T1557 (https://attack.mitre.org/techniques/T1557/). Run every command in the box — install first, then the usage lines — only on YOUR lab / program scope.
2. Signals of rogue
Duplicate SSID with foreign BSSID, unexpected wired uplink, open portal on corp SSID name.
Channel/power anomalies vs baseline survey.
3. Response literacy
Contain: deauth from WIPS, switch port shutdown, user notification.
Document chain of custody — defenders investigate, attackers do not 'test' on public air.
4. What you ship: rogue detection vocabulary
Three detection sources + two rogue signals + response outline.
5. What you record before the next lesson
Detection notes path.
6. Wrong vs right: stranger SSIDs vs YOUR lab AP
Worked failure — same MSF word, opposite target. Right never needs a café Wi-Fi or classmate laptop.
- Wrong: Wardrive the city to catalog SSIDs for twin targets.
- Right: Name detection methods. Next: never strangers.
Mission: rogue detection notes
1) List three rogue detection sources. 2) Name two rogue signals. 3) Write authorized survey scope sentence.
